“Clarice of Wye was one of the most powerful and memorable females ever produced in the outstanding Wye Plantation herd, and she left an ongoing influence on the breed. Clarice of Wye qualified for the elite Wye Plantation four-ton list, by yeaning 15 calves through 17 years of age, comprised of six sons and nine daughters with a lifetime total combined weaning weight of 8,167 pounds. She weighed 1,506 pounds. Conan of Wye, her most famous son, recorded record-breaking statistics at Wye Plantation and proved to be one of the top growth bulls of his era in the entire breed. This proven Pathfinder Sire started life with a birth weight of 85 pounds and went on to record a weaning weight of 657 pounds, a 205-day weight of 600 pounds for a weaning ratio of 105 and a 365-day weight of 1,243 pounds for an impressive average daily gain of 4.10 pounds per day on test to set the record as the highest gaining Wye bull throughout the decade of the 1960’s. Career of Wye, another notable son of Clarice of Wye, was best known as the sire of the $250,000 Lodge of Wye. Clarice of Wye is represented in countless Angus pedigrees.

“Luria of Wye earned the unique distinction of being the oldest living Pathfinder Dam of the Angus Breed when she weaned her 18th calf at 19 years of age in 1982. Her first 17 calves, comprised of seven sons and ten daughters, totaled a lifetime combined weaning weight of 9,831 pounds. Lurie was a picture of production. The photograph shown here was taken at 17 years of age. The great cow left many direct maternal descendants in the famed Wye herd. Loania of Wye, an outstanding daughter of Luria of Wye, produced the Pathfinder Sire, Luthien of Wye, and the noted Loanda of Wye. Luria of Wye was a truly unique Angus female with a remarkable production record.”

My grandpa, Sheldon Cotton, purchased Luthien of Wye in 1978. We bred an Oliver cow to Luthien in 2018. He will be used on heifers this year!

“Colleen of Wye was referred to as perhaps the greatest cow ever to grace the pastures at Wye Plantation. She earned a phenomenal progeny weaning ratio of 110 on her 14 calves in the Wye performance program for a lifetime record of 7,697 total pounds of weaning weight when she weaned her last calf at 16 years of age. She weighed 1,525 pounds at the time. Columbus of Wye, the most famous son of this great cow, was one of the all-time great breeding bulls ever produces at Wye plantation and a real cornerstone of improvement for the breed. He recorded a birth weight of 80 pounds, a 205-day weight of 605 pounds, an actual weaning weight of 784 pounds and a 365-day weight of 1,184 pounds, along with the mature weight of 2,396 pounds. Churchill of Wye, her famous last calf, also proved to be an outstanding sire. Colleen of Wye was an integral component in one of the breed’s leading herds.”
